A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent questions over operational security.
