Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
