An extensive two-month cruise through the Land Down Under is being halted following the tragic passing of an older female passenger who was left behind by the ship on a remote tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been walking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the vessel, but parted ways from the party for a break. The vessel departed without her and went back several hours later after the ship staff became aware the passenger was unaccounted for.

A large-scale search operation located her remains the following day.

Officials are investigating the event, together with police and the state coroner.

The CEO of the shipping company stated that guests and staff on the ship were notified that the continuation of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and earlier technical problems".

Via official communication, he added that travelers would be issued a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to organize the homeward trips of the passengers via chartered flights".

Authorities also issued an updated communication, and said they had "provided a order to the Captain" banning any new passengers from boarding the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would visit the ship in the port city upon its coming back.

Sequence of Incidents

The liner initially left the Australian port on 24 October, and was only 48 hours into the journey at the moment of the senior passenger's death. Lizard Island was the initial destination on the journey.

Passengers on board - who usually pay tens of thousands of money to join the voyage - were taken there for a daily excursion with the choice of walking or underwater exploration.

Relatives Statement

The daughter of the victim said that her family was "stunned and saddened that the liner left the island after an scheduled tour without my parent".

Via her announcement, she described her parent as an "energetic 80-year-old" who was a member of a bushwalking club.

"Based on limited details we have been provided, it looks that there was a lapse of care and ordinary reasoning," she said.

She further stated that she desired the investigation would be able to pinpoint what "the organization should have done that might have saved Mother's life".

"Based on information from the police that it was a exceptionally warm period, and mum became unwell on the hill climb," she revealed.

"They requested her to go back, unescorted. Then the vessel left, seemingly without performing a passenger count.

"At a certain moment in that sequence, or shortly after, mother passed away, by herself."

Organization Reaction

Through an announcement, the Chief Executive verified that the organization was "cooperating fully with investigators to aid their examination".

He mentioned that the firm was "very regretful that this has transpired" and had offered its total backing to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Practices

The vessel caters for up to 120 passengers with 46 crew, according to official details. It was specially constructed to enter remote regions of the nation's shoreline and is outfitted with "small boats" - minor craft used to transport passengers on day excursions.

Occurrences like this are rare, and cruise ships have procedures to document which passengers are embarking or disembarking, according to travel authorities.

"Leaving covertly or [back] on the ship really isn't an choice," a specialist stated.

Shipping companies consider these procedures very seriously and have "sophisticated systems in place to prevent such occurrences from happening," the authority continued.
