Lando Norris just pipped fellow driver and championship contender the Australian for the quickest lap in the final moments of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who seized the championship lead from Piastri by just one point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, beat the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver during the running before the sprint shootout scheduled for the evening session. The Red Bull star, the other racer in the championship fight, sitting 36 points Norris, ended up in P17 as his Red Bull team followed a alternative strategy. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to have an incident, albeit lightly, when he spun at Turn Four soon after starting. Tsunoda lost control over the exit kerbs before spinning across the escape zone, and was lucky to avoid just a light touch of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the very end of the practice, turning around through the fast downhill Mergulho corner leading to the final corner on to the pit straight. Hamilton wrapped up in 19th, one place behind teammate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's car P3, 0.619secs off the Australian's time. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of Mercedes' Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
