It has been 30 years since the original Toy Story movie debuted, establishing Pixar as a major animation studio and bringing audiences to beloved characters like Woody (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared recently, offering a glimpse into the plot but leaving fans wondering how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys

The preview reveals the young girl — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a latest plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer avoids is why Woody is back with his companions in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and helping giveaway items find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?

Connections from the Last Installment

At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her shirt.

It is hoped she is still the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
